We have developed a new telemedicine system, which combines web-based application, tablet app and digital retinal imaging, for comprehensive eye examination, diabetic retinopathy screening and eye disease diagnosis. Patient treatment and follow-up examination are implemented in the system too. The system provided a new service model through one grading center linking with multiple remote hospitals for eye care in Guangdong province, China. The early stage of the project study also undertook the responsibility of educations for remote-area doctors and image graders for DR grading on color funding images and research on the effectiveness of SMS reminder for patient revisit. Some other research such as comparison the accuracy of graders’ DR grading with gold standard, and doctor’s tentative diagnosis with final diagnosis etc. and data statistical information has been implementing in the system. In the preliminary practice, the project has successfully demonstrated the telemedicine system and associated workflows can be used for providing DR screening and eye disease diagnostic and treatment services in remote and rural hospitals in China.
