A survey of waterfowl of coastal NSW was made to the basis for a waterfowl conservation program of the National Parks and Wildlife Service of New South Wales. The wetlands of the region have been classified into 14 ecological types and information is provided on their distribution and extent. Of the most valuable waterfowl habitat previously available 60% has been destroyed or had its value for waterfowl much reduced, mostly due to drainage for flood mitigation. with increasingly intensive land usage the area available for waterfowl will continue to decrease, and to ensure effective conservation of waterfowl, substantial areas of wetland should be preserved and managed primarily for wildlife. The necessary areas are listed and steps should be taken now to ensure their preservation.
