"In both species [Medicago truncatula Gaertn, and Medicago polymorpha L. var. brevispina Heyn], pod burial either prevented seeds hardening or caused hard seeds to soften. Differences between the two species in herbage production were largely determined by differences in temperature requirement for germination and/or by the stage of maturity of the seeds when moisture became available." -- Summary, p. 79.
