CSIRO has completed, for the Australian Government, an investigation of opportunities for water and agricultural development in the Flinders and Gilbert catchments of north Queensland. Each catchment offers the possibility of irrigation developments approaching (in Flinders) or exceeding (in Gilbert) the scale of the current Ord River Irrigation Area. Here we present the key findings of the Assessment for the Gilbert catchment, followed by an overview of the considerations concerning the potential for irrigated and dryland agricultural development. Readers are referred to the full reports for more detailed information.
