Body Area Wireless Sensor Networks (BAN) are a key component to the ubiquitous healthcare revolution and perhaps one of its most challenging elements from a communications standpoint. The unique characteristics of the BAN wireless channel and the need for extreme energy efficiency require novel solutions in Medium Access Control (MAC) protocols. We present the main characteristics and challenges of such networks from the MAC perspective, as well as discuss standardization efforts and our current research activity.
